SCOUTING REPORT
Van Every spent the last two years in the Boston Red Sox system, after being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 2000 draft. Van Every, a center fielder, has only 28 major league at-bats, with a .286/.355/.464 line and one homer. He has a career .260/.360/.491 line in 754 career AAA at-bats. He has some pop in his bat, with 26 homers in 380 at-bats last year at AAA, and 43 in his career at the level. Van Every had knee surgery last June and missed the remainder of the 2009 season.  Coming in to 2010 he is a sleeper for the final outfield spot, and could be the best bet to be the 2010 version of Garrett Jones.  He may not hit for as much power as Jones, but if he can replicate his OBP and SLG numbers from the AAA in the majors, he would make a strong bench bat, and could push for a starting role in one of the corner outfield spots if someone like Lastings Milledge or Jose Tabata falters.
