WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
| At 19, Nivar was older than most Latin prospects when the Pirates signed him. His age probably played a role in them bringing him to spring training in 2010 after such a poor season in the DSL. He’s tall and thin, and they’re probably hoping he’ll hit for power if he fills out. He runs well and is a good defensive outfielder. 2009 Struggled in first pro season, showing a little power while drawing virtually no walks. He played center exclusively. 2010 Made the GCL roster but didn’t play until the very end of the season, getting only 13 ABs. He probably was hurt. 2011 Returned to GCL at age 21 and didn’t hit much, although he did show much improved plate discipline. He played in a little more than half the teams’ games, as he clearly ranks below Willy Garcia, Gregory Polanco and Jose Ozuna on the depth chart. He split his time mainly between center and left. If he’s still in the organization, Nivar could appear at State College as a backup, or return to the GCL. |
