WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

The Pirates on day two of the 2011 made several high-profile picks early, but quickly got back to their pattern in recent years of picking projectable high school RHPs.  Burnette was one.  He’s tall with long arms, and throws 86-88 according to Baseball America, although other sources have him throwing harder.  He also throws a curve and change.  He played basketball as well as baseball in high school.  He passed up a scholarship to Georgia Tech to sign at the beginning of August.

2011
R:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP 1 IP, 9.0 BB/9, 9.0 K/9

He got in one inning at the end of the GCL season.

2012
A-:  1-2-0, 4.71 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 21.0 IP, 2.6 BB/9, 3.4 K/9

Burnette opened in the State College rotation and pitched decently through five starts, aside from an extremely low K rate.  He went on the DL with a sore elbow, though, and missed the rest of the season.  An MRI showed no damage, so there weren’t expected to be any lasting consequences and he was slated to pitch in fall instructionals.

2013
A:  0-3-0, 16.87 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 10.2 IP, 11.0 BB/9, 11.8 K/9

The Pirates held Burnette back in extended spring training initially, then sent him to West Virginia to join the rotation in mid-May.  He made four starts and one relief appearance and they obviously went very badly.  The Pirates placed him on the disabled list with elbow soreness, but he eventually had shoulder surgery, which cost him the rest of the season.

2014
R:  0-2-0, 13.00 ERA, 2.56 WHIP, 9.0 IP, 8.0 BB/9, 5.0 K/9
R+:  0-2-0, 4.15 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 8.2 IP, 3.1 BB/9, 8.3 K/9
A:  1-0-0, 7.11 ERA, 2.21 WHIP, 6.1 IP, 7.1 BB/9, 9.9 K/9

Burnette worked his way back from the shoulder surgery, eventually making two appearances for West Virginia.

In four pro seasons, Burnette has managed to pitch just over 56 innings.  He’ll try to get in a full season in 2015, possibly opening at West Virginia.  He’ll be eligible for the Rule 5 draft after the season.
