WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Rider was a four-year starter at Kent State and is the school’s all-time leader in hits.  He came back from a down junior year to have very strong senior season.  He appears to have some gap power but apparently not great speed.  Rider played short at Kent State but the Pirates announced him as a second baseman.  That may be attributable to his size.  He’s never previously been drafted.  He signed shortly after the college world series.

R:  239/337/310, 71 AB, 5 2B, 9 BB, 13 K, 2-3 SB
A-:  119/235/136, 59 AB, 1 2B, 8 BB, 12 K, 3-3 SB

Rider started off in the GCL and played mainly short.  He moved up to State College in August and divided his time mainly between second and third.  He hit just decently in the GCL and not at all with the Spikes, although his plate discipline was good at both levels.

Rider didn’t have a good debut.  He opened 2013 in extended spring training, but could appear at West Virginia later.
