WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
| A running back with Stanford’s football team, Gaffney has a muscular build but is more of a gap-to-gap hitter than a power hitter. Since he profiles as a corner outfielder, that probably limits his projection to fourth outfielder. He’s shown good patience at the plate. For some reason, he had a terrible junior year. I haven’t found any indication that he was hurt. Baseball America rated him the #350 draft prospect anyway. A little surprisingly, he signed at the beginning of July.
2012 Gaffney batted leadoff for State College, playing right initially and then center after Barrett Barnes got hurt. He got on base nearly half the time and hit for good gap power. His OBP was supported by a high walk rate and 20 HBPs. He missed the last two weeks with a shoulder problem. If the amazing rate of getting hit by pitches continues, injuries could be an ongoing problem. Typically, the Pirates send college draftees who aren’t early round picks to West Virginia for their first full seasons, but Gaffney did well enough that the Pirates may consider sending him to Bradenton. |
