WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Vallejo was unable to play in 2012 due to some sort of contract issue.  He’s described as very athletic, so maybe he’ll be able to stay at short.  Despite his lack of pro experience, he was already 22 by the time he played a pro game.  Perhaps because of that, the Pirates brought him to camp and assigned him to the GCL before he’d played in the DSL.

2013
R:  306/325/468, 111 AB, 5 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 2 BB, 14 K, 4-5 SB

Vallejo hit well in his first pro season, with surprising power, although he showed little inclination to draw a walk.  Other than a few games at third, he spent all his time in left.  No doubt this was because the Pirates had Trae Arbet and Carlos Ozuna at short, but it probably indicates they don’t view Vallejo as more than an organizational player.

2014
R+:  289/317/406, 197 AB, 12 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 41 K, 5-7 SB
A-:  263/333/368, 19 AB, 1 3B, 1 BB, 4 K, 2-2 SB

Vallejo got into five games with Jamestown, then moved down to Bristol once the draftees began showing up.  He was one of the better hitters at Bristol on a very bad team, but the very poor K:BB ratio doesn’t bode well for his hitting at higher levels.  He played exclusively in the outfield, seeing time at all three positions but more in left and center than in right.

Although he’s hit well, Vallejo appears to be an organizational player.  He could see time at Morgantown and maybe West Virginia in 2015.
