WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES
|I haven’t been able to find any information on Gonzalez beyond his stats. He was a flyball pitcher prior to 2011, but he’s been a groundball pitcher in his two seasons since then. The Pirates selected him in the minor league phase of the 2013 Rule 5 draft.
Gonzalez debuted briefly in the Dominican as a 16-year-old.
Gonzalez pitched briefly in just two games, presumably due to injury.
The Yankees used Gonzalez as a starter in his third DSL season and he pitched well.
Despite his good 2010 season, the Yankees sent Gonzalez back to the DSL for a fourth year. His ERA was better than his peripheral numbers, all of which slipped from the year before.
Gonzalez missed the entire season with an unknown injury.
Gonzalez finally made it to the GCL at age 21. He pitched well in a swing role.
With an added affiliate in the Appalachian League for 2014, the Pirates probably needed some arms to help fill out the lower level pitching staffs. Depending on how they view him, Gonzalez could end up at Bristol, Jamestown or even West Virginia.
