WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Bastardo was 18 when the Pirates signed him.  He appears to be strictly a corner outfielder.

2013
DSL:  276/417/405, 185 AB, 12 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 32 BB, 39 K, 11-14 SB

Bastardo played right field regularly, showing a good arm with seven assists in just 43 games.  He hit better each month, his OPS going from .663 to .859 to 1.012 from June to August.  He showed a little power and walked a lot, although his K rate was a little high.

2014
R:  344/382/453, 64 AB, 4 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 14 K, 6-7 SB

Bastardo missed the first half of the GCL season due to a shoulder injury.  After that, he played strictly in right and hit very well.  The walk and K rates were terrible, but it’s a small sample size.

At 20, Bastardo was older than ideal for a Latin American player making his US debut, but he at least didn’t miss a beat with his hitting.  The Pirates could move him up as high as West Virginia in 2015, but the new NYPL affiliate in Morgantown seems the most likely destination.
