WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES
|De Leon is a small RHP who’s spent the maximum four years in the DSL. He’s mostly had good numbers, including some high K rates, but has also had control problems. The fact that the Pirates let him stay so long in the DSL probably shows they don’t think he has a high ceiling.
De Leon made six starts in his debut season. He didn’t allow many hits, but had poor walk and K rates.
De Leon continued to allow very few hits and greatly improved both his walk and K rates.
The Pirates moved De Leon primarily to the bullpen. He posted an outstanding K rate, but the control problems returned.
De Leon pitched entirely in relief. He continued to walk and strike out a lot of batters.
The Pirates brought De Leon to camp rather than release him. They sent him initially to the GCL, where he pitched well out of the bullpen. In August, they moved him up to Bristol, where he struggled with his control.
De Leon is already eligible for the Rule 5 draft and isn’t moving rapidly. If he comes back, it’ll be to use up bullpen innings at Bristol or Morgantown.
